Do You Feel Like Depression Is Weighing You Down?

Has a shift in your relationship or family life created feelings of uncertainty, self-doubt, and emptiness? Or, do you often feel as though you are moving through a fog or that there is an underlying void in your life? Maybe you believe that you should feel satisfied with your home, career, and life in general, and you struggle with guilt that you are ungrateful or complaining about nothing. Perhaps you are trying to make sense of your role and purpose, but can’t shake the belief that you just aren’t good enough. You may feel unsure what your goals and dreams are anymore because you have been caring for others and minimized caring for yourself.

Maybe you are finding it harder to communicate with friends or family members –especially children who are growing older, focusing on school and friends, or moving away from home – and you feel unheard, taken advantage of, and unsure of who you are. Do many things seem pointless or out of your reach? Do you want to understand why you are feeling empty and find a way to live with energy, clarity, and confidence?

Struggling with feelings of depression can leave you drained and disengaged from your world. You may sense that you are drifting away from your partner, or perhaps your relationship has suffered a severe breach of trust. You may be realizing that you and your partner now want different things in life, and it feels like someone is pulling the rug out from under you. Whether single or partnered, you might be feeling as though you don’t know what you want in your life at this point. Maybe you are finding it more challenging to get out of bed in the morning and navigate day-to-day life, and you wonder if it is possible to find relief.

If You Feel Empty and Detached, You Are Not Alone

In our modern culture, depression is a very widespread problem, and many people experience symptoms of depression at one point in their lives.

While there are many relationship factors that contribute to feelings of depression, and each person experiences depressive symptoms differently, breakdowns in communication, a lack of connection or sudden, unexpected change in your relationships can be a major source of feelings of emptiness and hopelessness. Strain or a breach of trust in your relationships can exacerbate feelings of distance and disconnection. If you are a mom with older children, it is very common to wonder about who you are or what you want when your children grow older, withdraw from conversations, or move away from home. The sense that you are unable to express yourself and feel heard, validated, and valued can create feelings of isolation, uncertainty, low self-worth, and the sense that you are lost in the shuffle and stuck going through the motions.

In addition, many people struggle with feelings of depression on-and-off throughout their lives, and family histories, personality style, and genetics can also contribute to symptoms of depression. Regardless of what is going on in your life, seeking treatment for depression with a skilled therapist, you can improve your sense of well-being and overall outlook on life.

Depression Treatment Can Help You Feel Connected and Confident

Each individual’s feelings of depression are complex and unique, and in sessions, I will work with you to look at your feelings of dread and disconnect from more than one angle. I know that you are not your symptoms – you are a complex individual who is experiencing a challenging or painful time. There is hope for healing and change.

In my practice, I utilize various empirically-validated theoretical approaches that will best match your goals in order to shift focus onto your wants, hopes, goals, and possibilities. It is my experience that therapy is most successful when we shift from dwelling on the problem to building solutions. What do you crave in your life? What do you want to be different? During depression counseling sessions, we will spend equal time identifying the source of painful symptoms and looking for ways to boost your mood, resolve challenges, and develop greater self-esteem and hope.

In addition to helping you visualize the life you most want to live, I will help you focus on the present. Depression and anxiety are very much related, as both can distract you from what you are feeling, sensing, and experiencing in the moment. Depression can keep you caught ruminating over the past, while anxiety runs forward, keeping you feeling on-edge and anticipating the worst-case scenario. In sessions, you can develop strategies and tools to focus on the present. Once you are better able to understand and cope with your experience of the now, you can clarify what you truly value and want. I will help you work to attain those goals.

As we work together, communication is vital, and I will help you develop effective communication skills so that you can feel better equipped to express yourself and feel understood, heard, and validated. I offer a non-judgmental space, where you can open up about any and all of your emotions, fears, and hopes. Rather than be a passive part of your therapy process, I prefer to have a conversation with you, helping you understand different ways to look at depression and life transitions. I will offer compassionate guidance, support, and the tools you need to navigate challenges with greater ease.

Regardless of the source of the emotional pain you are experiencing, you can discover lasting healing and relief. You can create the life you want to live. With solution-based therapy and a safe, supportive environment, we can work together to help you regain purpose and positivity in your life.

You may believe that depression counseling can help you find relief and a new perspective, but still have some questions or concerns...

Talking about my emotions will only make me feel worse.

One of the most important things we will discuss together during depression treatment sessions is how you can be more aware of the transitions you are going through. Once you identify the root of your depression, we can work together to find different ways to approach those core beliefs. Together, we will work to shift the way you view life’s challenges and your emotions so that you can discover new perspectives and solutions.

Depression treatment will take too long.

During sessions, I utilize effective solution-focused therapy techniques and scientifically proven therapeutic interventions to get to the root of the depression symptoms. By focusing on your situation thoroughly and constructively, we can clarify goals and help you achieve relief efficiently.

I doubt that treatment for depression can help me at all.

In life, there are some external factors and forces that none of us can change. The source of your feeling of depression may be something beyond your control. During sessions, I will work to help you better understand what you can’t change, and what you can. No matter what challenges life has thrown your way, I can help you to navigate frightening transitions, stress, and relationship conflict to make positive changes in your life.
